MPLS Highlights and Multiprotocol Label Switching Facts, Internet Cloud, T1 Bandwidth, Point to Point Solutions and Telecommunications Providers
The acronym MPLS stands for Multiprotocol Label Switching
Incoming packets in an MPLS network are assigned a label by a label edge router or (LER).
Packets are forwarded along a Label Switch Path or (LSP), where each label switch router (LSR) prioritizes each label whether it be Data, Video, Voice, etc. solely based on the contents of the label.
The LSR strips off the existing label at each hop and applies a new label that dictates how the next hop will forward the packet.
